Magic's Suggs won't need surgery for broken thumb, out indefinitely

Orlando Magic rookie guard Jalen Suggs will be sidelined for an extended period after fracturing his right thumb in the fourth quarter of Monday's road loss to the Philadelphia 76ers, the team announced.

Suggs returned to Orlando for further tests, and it was determined that he won't require surgery, the Magic confirmed. The Gonzaga product will be evaluated every two weeks to establish a timeline for his return.

Selected by the Magic with the fifth overall pick in the 2021 NBA Draft, Suggs was rounding into form following an up-and-down start to his rookie campaign. The 20-year-old is averaging 12.1 points, 3.4 rebounds, and 3.5 assists across 20 games for Orlando.

Suggs' injury gives head coach Jamahl Mosley some selection issues in his backcourt. Cole Anthony, who leads the team with 19.6 points per game, has missed the last six contests due to an ankle injury, and Markelle Fultz remains sidelined after tearing his ACL in January.
