Barring injury or any unforeseen circumstances, LeBron James is on pace to surpass Kareem Abdul-Jabbar as the NBA's all-time leading scorer within the next few seasons.
The Los Angeles Lakers icon is 3,021 points ahead of James but hopes the four-time Finals MVP breaks his long-standing record.
"I'm excited to see it happen. I don't see records as personal accomplishments, but more as human achievements," Abdul-Jabbar told NBA insider Marc Stein. "If one person can do something that's never been done, that means we all have a shot at doing it. It's a source of hope and inspiration. ... We all win when a record is broken, and if LeBron breaks mine, I will be right there to cheer him on."
James has scored 35,367 points over his illustrious 18-year career. He leapfrogged the late Kobe Bryant for third on the all-time leaderboard in January 2020.
The 2003 No. 1 pick sits 1,561 points back of Karl Malone for second place.
James already shattered the NBA's record for playoff points, steals, and free throws made.
