The Detroit Pistons traded Derrick Rose to the New York Knicks in exchange for guard Dennis Smith Jr. and a 2021 second-round pick via the Charlotte Hornets, the Knicks announced Monday.
Rose recorded 14.2 points and 4.2 assists per game off the bench this season for Detroit, which ranks last in the Eastern Conference. The 32-year-old is earning $7.7 million in salary and will become a free agent in the upcoming offseason.
The former MVP and the Pistons mutually agreed that a trade would benefit both parties, The Athletic's Shams Charania reports.
The swap reunites Rose and head coach Tom Thibodeau for a third time after stints together with the Chicago Bulls and Minnesota Timberwolves. This move will also be Rose's second spell in New York, where he played during the 2016-17 campaign.
Smith has made just three appearances for the Knicks this year. The 23-year-old reportedly asked the team to assign him to its G League squad after spending the season stuck outside the rotation, a request the Knicks granted earlier this month.
