The Houston Rockets are finalizing a deal with Dallas Mavericks assistant Stephen Silas for him to become the team's next head coach, ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski reports.
Silas has never worked as a full-time NBA head coach. He's set to replace outgoing bench boss Mike D'Antoni, who stepped down from his post last month.
Silas' offensive creativity and strong pedigree around the league were key selling points for the Rockets, according to Wojnarowski.
The 46-year-old is the son of former player and coach Paul Silas. They become the fifth father-son duo to occupy head coaching positions in league history.
Prior to joining the Mavericks ahead of the 2018-19 campaign, Silas' resume included stints as an assistant with the Charlotte Hornets, Golden State Warriors, and Cleveland Cavaliers spread over two decades.
Silas is set to become the 15th head coach in franchise history. His reported hiring leaves the Oklahoma City Thunder as the only team with a head coaching vacancy.
