The New York Knicks' never-ending head coaching search has taken a turn.
Los Angeles Lakers assistant coach Jason Kidd has emerged as the front-runner after contract negotiations with Tom Thibodeau stalled, a source told Stefan Bondy of the New York Daily News.
The Knicks reportedly view Kidd "as a conduit" to attracting marquee free agents, but New York's front office would prefer selecting his assistants as some within the organization are skeptical about his coaching ability.
Mike Woodson, who's also reportedly on the Knicks' head coaching shortlist, is said to be among the candidates for Kidd's staff in the event the latter is hired.
"It's basically to save Kidd from himself," a source told Bondy.
Madison Square Garden chairman James Dolan has apparently been "unwilling" to meet Thibodeau's contract demands. Interim head coach Mike Miller is reportedly an option if New York is unable to strike a deal with the former Coach of the Year.
The Knicks missed the playoffs for the seventh straight season after posting a 21-45 mark in 2019-20.
