The Orlando Magic laid off 31 full-time employees on Friday, the team confirmed to The Athletic's Josh Robbins and Shams Charania. The cuts constitute about 10% of the team's full-time staff.
"Our business, as well as many others like us, are significantly impacted due to COVID-19," Magic CEO Alex Martins said in a statement. "We have had to make some very difficult business decisions in these unprecedented times. Due to this reality we have had to make the very hard decision to evaluate our overall structure, reorganize, and reduce our headcount."
The NBA is set to resume play in its Walt Disney World Resort bubble this month, just 15 miles from the Magic's home arena, the Amway Center. Due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, it's not known when any North American professional sports team will be able to resume games with fans in attendance.
In March, the DeVos family, which owns the Magic, funded a compensation package worth around $2 million to pay hourly workers associated with the team and the family's other sports holdings.
