Report: Orlando bubble to cost NBA more than $150M

Resuming the NBA's 2019-20 season will cost a pretty penny.

Operating the league's bubble at Walt Disney World Resort in Orlando is set to cost the league over $150 million, ESPN's Brian Windhorst reports.

The expenses stem from providing accommodations for players and support staff on 22 teams, operating seven practice courts, and playing games at three arenas over a three-month period.

Providing meals, daily COVID-19 testing, security, transportation, and entertainment also figure into the league's costs, Windhorst adds.

This $150-million figure comes as the league braces for revenue losses in excess of $1 billion due to the coronavirus pandemic, sources told Windhorst. The NBA also lost hundreds of millions in revenue earlier this season as part of the fallout from Houston Rockets general manager Daryl Morey's tweet supporting Hong Kong protesters sent in early October.

Playing out the playoffs and the remainder of the regular season should help salvage the NBA's financial losses to a certain extent. The league would've lost approximately $900 million in revenue from national television contracts if the playoffs were canceled, sources told The Athletic's Sam Amick in May.
