Report: Thibodeau atop list of Knicks' targets for next head coach

Tom Thibodeau is the leading candidate to become the New York Knicks' next head coach, sources told The Athletic's Mike Vorkunov and Shams Charania.

The Knicks will reportedly begin their search soon, with a decision expected to be made within the next few weeks.

Thibodeau last coached in the NBA with the Minnesota Timberwolves in 2018-19, his third season in charge of the team. However, he was fired from the position after a 19-21 start to the year.

Prior to his time in Minnesota, Thibodeau served as head coach of the Bulls for five seasons. He managed a combined 255-139 record in Chicago and led the squad to five consecutive postseason appearances. He was dismissed from that role in 2015 after reportedly falling out with the team's front office.

Since leaving the Timberwolves, Thibodeau has spent time visiting other franchises during practices and shootarounds, including the Los Angeles Clippers and Golden State Warriors.

Knicks interim head coach Mike Miller will also reportedly receive an interview for the permanent role. Miller was promoted from an assistant to bench boss following David Fizdale's firing in December. If the NBA does eventually resume the 2019-20 season, Miller would remain as coach until the campaign is complete, according to Charania and Vorkunov.

New York may also consider another local option. Kenny Atkinson, who unexpectedly stepped down as head coach of the Brooklyn Nets on March 7, is also reportedly likely to receive an interview.
