The Golden State Warriors may be interested in bringing Karl-Anthony Towns to the Bay Area.
The Warriors are monitoring Towns' status in Minnesota, reports The Athletic's Ethan Strauss. Several team executives at the G League Showcase, which took place in Las Vegas earlier in December, said Towns is unhappy with his current team, Strauss adds.
Towns has been part of just one winning season in Minnesota despite individual career averages of 22.5 points, 11.8 rebounds, 2.7 assists, and 1.5 blocks. The team has yet to win a playoff series since selecting the former Kentucky standout first overall in 2015.
His reported discontent could be due to yet another slow start by Minnesota this season. The Timberwolves currently sit 13th in the Western Conference with an 11-20 record; they have just two more wins than the Warriors, who entered the year without Klay Thompson and later lost Stephen Curry to a broken hand. Warriors forward Draymond Green has also missed time with a finger ligament injury.
Should the Warriors eventually elect to make a move for Towns, a potential trade won't be straightforward. The 24-year-old is in the first year of a five-year super-max extension he signed with the Timberwolves in 2018. He's earning just over $27 million this season but will see his salary climb to $36 million in 2023-24, according to Spotrac.
