Report: Spurs' Hammon interested in Knicks' HC role if hired on long-term deal

San Antonio Spurs assistant Becky Hammon would be interested in the New York Knicks' head coaching vacancy if she could land a four- or five-year deal with the club, a source told CNBC's Jabari Young and Ganesh Setty.

If hired, the ex-New York Liberty guard would be the NBA's first female head coach.

The Knicks fired head coach David Fizdale on Friday after a 21-83 stint with the club. His successor will be New York's 13th bench boss in the last 18 years.

Hammon has spent the last five years on Gregg Popovich's staff and is well-respected in league circles. Veteran big man Pau Gasol penned an open letter about female coaches in May 2018, praising Hammon's work during the two seasons he spent with her in San Antonio.

"I've played with some of the best players of this generation ... and I've played under two of the sharpest minds in the history of sports, in Phil Jackson and Gregg Popovich. And I'm telling you: Becky Hammon can coach," Gasol wrote in "The Players' Tribune." "I'm not saying she can coach pretty well. I'm not saying she can coach enough to get by. I'm not saying she can coach almost at the level of the NBA's male coaches. I'm saying: Becky Hammon can coach NBA basketball. Period."

Hammon has been the Spurs' summer league bench boss on three separate occasions, winning the annual offseason competition in 2015. The 42-year-old was a six-time WNBA All-Star and was voted one of the league's top 15 players of all time in 2011.
