Minnesota Timberwolves wing Josh Okogie will play for Nigeria at the FIBA World Cup later this summer, he announced Monday.
Okogie was born in Lagos, Nigeria, though a brief stint with USA Basketball on an under-17 team complicated his eligibility to play for his birth country. The youngster's announcement appears to confirm that FIBA has given him the go-ahead to switch national teams.
Okogie has already shown signs of promise since the Timberwolves selected him 20th overall in the 2018 draft. The 20-year-old finished his rookie campaign averaging 7.7 points, 2.9 rebounds, and 1.2 steals in 23.7 minutes per game.
