After more than 15 years as general manager of the San Antonio Spurs, it appears that R.C. Buford is almost ready to pass the torch.
The 58-year-old executive is preparing to hand the position to his assistant, Brian Wright, league sources told The Athletic's Jabari Young.
Wright has taken on an increased role over the past year, sources told Young, and notably fielded trade calls and packages for superstar Kawhi Leonard. Wright would apparently continue reporting directly to Buford after the promotion.
Some people around the NBA believe Buford's new role will be overseeing Spurs Sports & Entertainment, according to Young. Buford has been taking business and leadership courses over the last few years.
Buford is the architect of one of the league's premier organizations. San Antonio has prospered despite being a small-market club, building a foundation of excellent drafting and player development and winning five NBA titles since he joined the franchise as its head scout in 1994.
Buford is a two-time NBA Executive of the Year.
