The Boston Celtics are reportedly attempting to trade Aron Baynes and his expiring contract to teams with available cap space, sources told Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN.

Baynes is set to earn $5.4 million next season. Offloading the 32-year-old center could potentially give the Celtics $23 million in cap room - provided Kyrie Irving and Al Horford are indeed on their way out, as now expected.

Acquiring Baynes' expiring contract could also help set up a team for next summer's free agent class, when names such as Anthony Davis, Draymond Green, Gordon Hayward, and DeMar DeRozan could potentially be on the market. The Celtics big man could also be flipped midseason in order to land other assets.

Baynes joined Boston ahead of the 2017-18 season. He started 85 of his 132 games with the franchise, averaging 5.8 points, 5.1 rebounds, and 1.1 assists. He also developed a respectable 3-point shot in his second campaign with the Celtics, converting 21-of-61 attempts (34.4 percent) from beyond the arc this past season.

The Australian has also played three seasons for the San Antonio Spurs and another two with the Detroit Pistons.
