Lamar Odom was determined to not miss the 2004 Olympic Games.

So much so, in fact, that the retired forward details in his new memoir "Darkness to Light" that he had to use a fake penis to pass a mandatory drug test.

In an excerpt that People's Natalie Stone obtained, Odom recalls USA Basketball informing him of an upcoming drug test, catching the two-time NBA champion off guard after being selected to the team.

"There was absolutely no way I was going to pass," Odom writes. "I'd been smoking weed every day that summer. Panic set in."

In a rush, Odom ordered a prosthetic penis to arrive the next day after searching for different ways to beat a drug test. Then, shortly before undergoing the test, Odom instructed his trainer to secretly urinate into a hidden reservoir before attaching the prosthetic penis to himself.

He explained pulling off the scheme despite the testing official watching while standing immediately next to him inside the bathroom.

"I unzipped my pants and carefully slid the fake penis through the zipper hole," he writes. "To get the pee to come out of the tip, I had to squeeze the shaft repeatedly. He stuck a thermometer in the cup to gauge the temperature … satisfied that the pee was mine, said 'welcome to Team USA.'"

Even with Odom on the roster, the United States had to settle for bronze after losing to Argentina in the semifinals.

Odom struggled with drug addiction in the years right after his career. In 2015, he suffered a nearly fatal overdose that he said earlier this month still affects his memory. He never played in the NBA again, but the 39-year-old will return to the court in the BIG3's upcoming season.
