Raptors assistant Phil Handy: Kawhi 'doing great' physically
The Toronto Raptors don't appear to be worried about Kawhi Leonard's recovery status heading into the upcoming season.
Appearing on the Toronto Talk Sports podcast, new assistant coach Phil Handy spoke about the progress he's seen from Leonard during offseason workouts.
"He's doing great," Handy said. "He's in great shape. Body looks good, he's feeling good, he's moving well. I don't anticipate any issues or any problems. He's working hard and he's a hard worker."
Handy, who broke into the NBA coaching ranks as a player development staffer with the Los Angeles Lakers in 2011 before spending the past five seasons on the Cleveland Cavaliers' staff, also talked about Leonard's mindset going into this season after he played just nine games last year.
"He's a gamer man," said Handy. "He is a gamer. Players like that just want to compete. ... However (his situation with the San Antonio Spurs) played out, however it happened, he's just looking forward to what's next and what's in front of him right now and (putting) his best foot forward for the Raptors organization this season."
The team and its fans will surely be hoping to see him in action when the Raptors opens up the preseason Sept. 29 against the Portland Trailblazers.
