Report: Paul George tells Thunder he will opt out, become UFA
Paul George has informed the Oklahoma City Thunder he will not opt into the final year of his contract and will become an unrestricted free agent, ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski reports.
George had until 11:59 p.m. ET on Friday to exercise or decline a $20.7-million player option in his deal with the Thunder.
The move does not come as a surprise, as opting out allows George to sign a more lucrative deal.
George remains interested in returning to the Thunder on a such a deal, Wojnarowski notes, and head coach Billy Donovan and star guard Russell Westbrook have reportedly made a strong case for a reunion.
The Los Angeles Lakers are reportedly also high on California native George's list of desired destinations, and Thursday's news will only heighten the rumors linking a trio of George, fellow free agent LeBron James, and Kawhi Leonard (via trade) to L.A.
The Philadelphia 76ers and Houston Rockets are among other teams said to have interest in pursuing the five-time NBA All-Star.
