Following a strong freshman campaign, Duke shooting guard Gary Trent Jr. has declared for the NBA Draft.
Trent, whose father had a nine-year NBA career that ended in 2004, averaged 14.5 points, 4.2 rebounds, 1.4 assists, and 1.2 steals in his lone collegiate season. Perhaps most notably, he shot 40.2 percent from 3-point range on 6.5 attempts per game.
"Gary was the best 3-point shooter in the ACC," Duke head coach Mike Krzyzewski said in a statement. "At the NBA level, that's what they're looking for. He has the size of a two-guard who will be able to fit in the NBA. We appreciate everything Gary brought to Duke Basketball and wish him the best as he begins his journey in professional basketball."
Trent's draft projection is hamstrung by concerns about his athleticism, playmaking, and defensive upside. Some big boards peg him as a mid-to-late first-round pick, while others - like ESPN's mock draft - have him going in the middle of the second round.
