Noel doesn't regret nixing long-term contract last summer

With Nerlens Noel struggling to find playing time in Dallas - and making headlines for his off-court decisions - it's downright shocking that the Mavericks big man reportedly turned down a four-year, $70-million extension last summer.

Instead, the 23-year-old wound up signing a one-year, $4.1-million qualifying offer. Rather than beat himself up over turning down a life-changing payday, Noel is still as committed and confident about his future prospects in the Association.

"I most definitely don't regret anything. I'm not nervous because I know my abilities," Noel told Bleacher Report's Yaron Weitzman. "I know what I'm capable of. I know what I can get on the court any time, day or night, and do. It's simply getting the opportunity to show it."

Noel averaged 5.8 points and 5.9 rebounds in just 18.2 minutes per game through his first 11 appearances this season, but failed to crack six minutes in his next six outings. He logged just 3:52 of playing time in his most recent appearance on Nov. 22.

For now, Noel will be on the shelf for approximately one month, having undergone elective thumb surgery last week. Once healthy, the athletically gifted big man will continue to try to work his way back into coach Rick Carlisle's good graces.

"I have no idea (why I was benched)," Noel said. "I know that I'm working hard and through it and making sure I'm going to always be ready when my number's called. Just make sure I'm on top of everything else, that I'm getting better, make sure I'm getting my extra work in so when that time comes to get back in the rotation, I'll be ready."
