Kerr not willing to commit to extension with Warriors as health issues linger

Golden State Warriors head coach Steve Kerr has more pressing concerns than jumping at the chance to sign a contract extension to remain with the organization.

To Kerr, his health comes first.

"I'm just not ready to look that far ahead," Kerr said Sunday, according to NBC Sports' Monte Poole.

Kerr was absent for the first 43 games of the 2015-16 regular season, and then another 11 games during the 2017 playoffs, because of health-related issues. He continues to experience symptoms related to multiple back surgeries he underwent in 2015, including dizziness and headaches.

"I know I enjoy coaching and that I want to keep coaching," said Kerr. "But it's impossible to know if I'll be in the position to do so."

This upcoming season marks the fourth year of Kerr's five-year, $25-million deal. He's won over 84 percent of his games since taking over as coach in May 2014, with an overall record of 207-39.

Warriors general manager Bob Myers will wait until the time is right to come to terms on a new deal with Kerr, if he feels the coach is physically able to carry on working with the players.

"It's not top of mind because I just can't envision him not being our coach," Myers said during the Warriors Insider Podcast. "If something happened health related, that's different. But if it's his option or our option to work something out, I'm really confident that it won't be an issue - for him or for us."
