Wizards will retire Bullets icon Phil Chenier's No. 45
Washington basketball fans of a certain vintage will have an opportunity to celebrate one of the greats this coming season.
The Wizards will retire the No. 45 jersey of former Bullets shooting guard Phil Chenier on March 23, the team announced.
Chenier played for the Bullets, first in Baltimore, then in Washington, from 1971-80, averaging 17.9 points, 3.6 rebounds, and three assists per game. A three-time All-Star and All-NBA Second Team selection in 1974-75, Chenier helped lead a strong Bullets team featuring Wes Unseld and Elvin Hayes throughout the 1970s.
Though Chenier suffered a season-ending back injury in 1977-78, which led to his rapid decline, the Washington Bullets took home the franchise's only championship that year.
After his playing days ended at age 30, Chenier served as the team's primary color commentator for over three decades. This coming season, he is set to shift into a studio analyst role, the team's broadcast partner announced.
"As both a player and a broadcaster, Phil has been a pillar of our Bullets and Wizards family," franchise majority owner Ted Leonsis wrote in the team's release. "If you're a fan, Phil has played a role in your connection to this team and this organization. We are thrilled to retire his jersey this season and to express our gratitude for his irreplaceable contributions to our D.C. family."
