Celtics' Stevens thinks Isaiah may need surgery

Isaiah Thomas has been ruled out for the remainder of the postseason with a right hip injury, and it may take more than a little offseason R&R to cure what ails him.

Thomas is set to visit a specialist in the coming days, and Boston Celtics coach Brad Stevens believes the injury - which the team has called a femoral-acetabular impingement with a labral tear - may require surgery.

"I think it could be," Stevens told reporters Sunday. "It just depends on what happens when he visits the specialist."

Thomas re-aggravated the injury during Game 2 of the Eastern Conference finals against the Cleveland Cavaliers on Friday, but Stevens says he was playing through significant pain before then, and was surprised the All-NBA point guard even played Game 7 against the Washington Wizards.

Stevens added that Thomas had tried to convince doctors to let him play the second half against the Cavs on Friday, even as the Celtics trailed by more than 40 points.

"He wants to play through any and all circumstances."
