Report: Hawks were prepared to trade Millsap to Raptors if Horford re-signed
The Atlanta Hawks are listening to offers on power forward Paul Millsap, and one of the teams that's called about him in the past reportedly got very close to landing him this past summer.
As they made a last-ditch push to retain then free-agent center Al Horford, the Hawks reportedly discussed a Millsap trade with the Denver Nuggets, Phoenix Suns, and Houston Rockets. But it was the Toronto Raptors who came closest to landing him in a deal, according to ESPN's Brian Windhorst.
"They were all set to trade Millsap if Al Horford had re-signed," Windhorst said on Tuesday's TrueHoop Podcast. "They were going to trade him to Toronto. And then that deal fell through when Horford went to Boston."
After Horford spurned them to sign a four-year max deal with the Celtics, the Hawks effectively took Millsap off the table, loathe to lose both of their All-Star big men in one offseason.
It's unclear what the Raptors offered the Hawks, or how set-in-stone the proposed trade was in the event Horford had re-signed. In any case, the Raptors didn't get their man. But that door may not be closed just yet.
