Ryan Bader's road to a light heavyweight title shot should involve a violent pit stop against Anthony Johnson. At least, that's what Johnson's angling for.
A former welterweight with prodigious power in his hands and feet, Johnson came agonizingly close to capturing the title when he sent Daniel Cormier careening to the canvas during the opening round of their bout at UFC 187. Cormier showed championship resolve, though, eventually grinding Johnson down and finishing him with a third-round rear-naked choke.
Now, with a streaking Bader seemingly poised to challenge for the 205-pound strap, Johnson took to his Facebook page to issue the following challenge:
Just read that Ryan Bader said he's the number one contender. Well, imo, he isn't by any means. How can a true athlete feel that he/she is the next best in line for a title shot when they haven't fought anybody in the top 3 of rankings?
Have some pride! Don't run or hide...
Let's fight to see who's the real number one contender.
I WANT TO FIGHT YOU RYAN BADER! I respect you and your abilities, but LET'S FIGHT AND SEE WHO'S THE REAL NUMBER ONE CONTENDER!

Of course, the possibility of Jon Jones' return could throw a monkey wrench into future light heavyweight title plans. UFC president Dana White has already said Jones will get an immediate title shot once his suspension is officially lifted.
