Dustin Poirier says he's agreed to short-notice bout vs. Nate Diaz
Dustin Poirier might be jumping right back into the Octagon.
Poirier said Tuesday he's verbally accepted an offer from the UFC to square off with Nate Diaz on "super short notice," and now he's waiting for Diaz to also agree.
"No contract has been signed yet, but if this does go through, I'm going to take it," Poirier said on "THE FIGHT with Teddy Atlas" podcast.
Poirier added the fight would take place in the welterweight division. He's only competed at featherweight and lightweight in the UFC, while Diaz - a former lightweight - has fought at 170 pounds since 2016.
Just days after Poirier lost to lightweight champion Charles Oliveira at UFC 269 in December, Diaz and Poirier traded barbs on Twitter and said they were willing to fight each other as soon as January.
Poirier later revealed the UFC was unable to finalize the fight in time for its first pay-per-view event of 2022, but that UFC 271 on Feb. 12 was a possibility. Diaz responded with a claim that the promotion wasn't interested in paying Poirier for the fight.
However, it was later reported by MMA Fighting's Damon Martin that plans for the bout to happen on an upcoming card appear to have been abandoned.
