The local kid has been rewarded with a new contract.

Canadian international Jonathan Osorio penned a new long-term deal with Toronto FC on Thursday, keeping him with the Reds for the foreseeable future.

The midfielder's previous contract was set to expire at the end of the current season, according to The Canadian Press.

"It's an amazing feeling to re-sign for the club that I love. This club and city mean everything to me and my family and for that reason I chose to stay and help bring more trophies and success to Toronto FC," Osorio said in a statement. "I want to help make Toronto FC recognized worldwide.

"It's a big challenge but I know that I am up for it. I want to thank everyone at the club for helping to get this deal finalized."

After coming up through the ranks at the Reds' academy, Osorio made his Major League Soccer debut in 2013 as a substitute against Sporting Kansas City. He already owns Toronto's franchise record for career appearances with 202, and was a key figure in the club's MLS Cup triumph last season.

While Toronto didn't specify terms of Osorio's new deal, club president Bill Manning confirmed in Thursday's news conference that the Brampton, Ontario, native will now be a Targeted Allocation Money player, allowing the club to circumvent the league's salary cap and make Osorio "one of the highest-paid Canadian players in the world."

According to the MLS Players Association salary guide, the 26-year-old is earning a base salary of $201,350.63 this season.

Meanwhile, according to a June report from MLSSoccer.com's Alicia Rodriguez, Osorio has been the subject of interest from European and Mexican clubs. While the new long-term extension doesn't entirely preclude him from eventually heading overseas, it does allow TFC to negotiate a fee for any potential transfer as opposed to letting Osorio walk for free.

In 35 appearances across all competitions this season, Osorio leads TFC in scoring with 16 goals, eclipsing the 15 scored by Sebastian Giovinco - albeit in four fewer appearances.

Overall, Osorio has scored 33 goals in all competitions for the Reds across six seasons.
