Teams that select players with declined options must take on the player at the same salary in that option year, while clubs must make out-of-contract players a bona fide offer.

In the second stage, set for next Friday, teams can negotiate new terms with their picks. That's the stage where the majority of selections are made.

Players are allowed to opt out of Stage 1 should they so choose, which was the case for Robbie Keane, Aurelien Collin, Erik Friberg, Zach Loyd, Patrice Bernier, and Ashtone Morgan.
