Cardinals' Garcia pulled after 2 innings, Game 4 starter Lynn takes over
Jaime Garcia's day is done after only 39 pitches.
The St. Louis Cardinals southpaw allowed five runs - none earned - and was pulled after two innings of work in Game 2 against the Chicago Cubs as his defense crumbled around him. The Cardinals are saying his removal was due to a stomach virus.
After St. Louis took a 1-0 lead on a Matt Carpenter solo homer in the bottom of the first, the Cubs took advantage of two defensive errors - including one by Garcia - to rally for five runs in the top of the second.
"I've been dreaming of having this opportunity," Garcia said postgame. "It's disappointing. I'm disappointed. My main goal was to get to the postseason and help this team win games. That's been my (focus) all year. We're not done yet and all I can say is next time I take the mound I'll definitely be better."
Scheduled Game 4 starter Lance Lynn took over in relief, but only threw 24 pitches before being replaced by Carlos Villanueva.
Garcia allowed more than four runs in just one of his 20 starts during the regular season.
