Daz Cameron was the first pick of the MLB Draft compensation round, but his signing bonus says otherwise.
Cameron, the son of former major league outfielder Mike Cameron, has reportedly come to terms on a deal with the Houston Astros in the ballpark of $4 million.
The 37th overall pick of the draft, Cameron signed for more than twice his slot money, which is slated at $1,668,600. To find money like that, you have to climb all the way up to fellow Astros draftee, fifth overall pick Kyle Tucker, who also signed for $4 million.
To put things in perspective, he signed for more money than sixth overall pick Tyler Jay, a lefty out of Illinois who signed for $3.8 million.
Cameron, who many scouts felt was first-round talent, slid down to the Astros due to concerns over his signability. He was named Georgia's Gatorade Player of the Year following 14 homers, 59 RBIs, and 28 stolen bases in his senior year.
Given the Astros had a $17.2-million bonus pool, the club was confident it could sign him away from his commitment to Florida State.
