Report: Scherzer seeking $200M; Tigers unlikely to spend big to re-sign him

Detroit Tigers general manager Dave Dombrowski spent Tuesday afternoon at the winter meetings refuting an earlier suggestion that the club is prepared to spend big to re-sign Max Scherzer, arguably the top pitcher available in free agency.

"I don't know where he got that from," Dombrowski told MLB.com's Jason Beck of Buster Olney's report from Tuesday morning. "That's not accurate. I know it didn't come from this room."

Dombrowski, who said last month he's "not counting on" reaching a deal with the former Cy Young Award winner, added Tuesday that his team's offseason strategy hasn't changed in recent weeks.

Scherzer previously rejected a six-year, $144-million extension offer from the Tigers during spring training and is reportedly seeking a deal worth more than $200 million, according to Jon Morosi of FOX Sports.
