Dr. James Andrews, Kevin Wilk design app to help pitchers avoid injury
As one of the world's foremost orthopedic surgeons, Dr. James Andrews has seen the number of young pitchers requiring Tommy John surgery increase rapidly over the past few years, and as a result, he's decided to step into the realm of Candy Crush Saga and Angry Birds in an attempt to prevent elbow injuries.
Andrews, along with physical therapist Dr. Kevin Wilk, developed "Throw like a Pro", an iOs app that uses scientific data to create programs, exercises and guidelines designed to teach pitchers how to avoid shoulder and elbow injuries through proper preparation, mechanics, and rest.
"Hopefully this will help them to play at peak performance without injury," Wilk told ESPN. "So they can pursue their baseball aspirations in a healthy manner."
Andrews, for his part, hopes his new entry to the app store will help put an end to widespread arm injuries among pitchers.
"I'm really excited," Andrews said. "For the first time, kids and parents everywhere will have access to the information and routines that we hope will put an end to this epidemic."
