Lagares, based on manager Terry Collins' comments Thursday, could start 2014 in a platoon or possibly at Triple-A Las Vegas, ESPN New York reports.
Analysis:
Collins said he prefers Eric Young Jr. as the team;s leadoff hitter and that Chris Young, despite his struggles against righties, mean that Lagares could be the odd-man out and open the year in the minors. Lagares is the team's best defensive center fielder, so what they may gain in offense, they will look in defense, especially if Young is the starter in left field.
