The Philadelphia Phillies named Don Mattingly as their full-time manager, the team announced Wednesday.
Additionally, the club signed him to a two-year contract through the 2028 campaign.
Mattingly began the 2026 season as Philadelphia's bench coach but took over as interim manager when Rob Thomson was fired following a 9-19 start. The Phillies went 79-55 under Mattingly before losing to the Atlanta Braves in the wild-card round.
The Phillies reached out to Alex Cora about the managerial role after their postseason ended, but he reportedly plans to take the 2027 season off. Philadelphia also approached Cora in April when Thomson was let go. Cora previously managed under Phillies president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski with the Boston Red Sox.
Mattingly owns a 968-1,005 record (.491) in his 13 seasons as an MLB skipper. The 65-year-old previously managed the Los Angeles Dodgers (2011-15) and Miami Marlins (2016-22). He also worked for the New York Yankees (2004-07) and Toronto Blue Jays (2023-25) in multiple coaching roles.
The Phillies have made the playoffs in five straight seasons but haven't won a World Series since 2008.
