Rizzo: Yankees doing same thing every year is 'definition of insanity'

Former New York Yankees first baseman Anthony Rizzo believes his past team is spinning in circles in its pursuit of a 28th World Series.

"If you talk to people there, they almost think it's insanity," Rizzo said on the "Ross and Rizzo Unfiltered" podcast after the Yankees were swept by the Tampa Bay Rays in the ALDS.

"Like we just keep doing the same every year and we don't win. That's insanity. That's the definition of insanity if you think it's going to change. You cannot look at this lineup and not be optimistic about it. But they don't win. They can't beat the good teams. And that's just how it's been year over year.

"We're talking about one of the highest payrolls in the game and a fanbase that expects to win year after year. They haven't won since 2009. I don't know what needs to change."

New York's title drought extended to 17 seasons following the club's latest playoff exit. The Bronx Bombers have only reached the World Series once during this run without a championship despite qualifying for the postseason 13 times.

The Yankees are expected to extend longtime general manager Brian Cashman, who's contract expires at the end of the season. Manager Aaron Boone is signed through 2027. He's held the position since 2018, going 790-565 during the regular season.

New York owns MLB's third-highest payroll at $336 million.

Jazz Chisholm Jr., Trent Grisham, David Bednar, and Paul Goldschmidt are a few of the team's impending free agents.
