Chicago Cubs star third baseman Alex Bregman sustained multiple facial fractures after being struck by a foul ball while standing in the on-deck circle during Sunday's game, sources told Jeff Passan of ESPN.
Bregman reportedly won't undergo surgery and hopes to return for the playoffs, which begin Sept. 29.
The 32-year-old's left eye was so swollen Monday that the Cubs are still figuring out the next steps for his recovery, sources told Patrick Mooney of The Athletic.
Bregman was hit in his cheekbone during the fourth inning of the Cubs' 9-1 win over the Cincinnati Reds. He went to a local hospital following the freak injury.

The three-time All-Star posted a photo of his face on social media Monday after the team returned to Chicago.

Bregman has 26 homers with 89 RBIs and 5.2 fWAR over 152 games this season.
Entering the final week of the regular season, the Cubs are in a battle with the San Diego Padres and Philadelphia Phillies for the NL's top wild-card seed.
