The Boston Red Sox placed All-Star first baseman Willson Contreras on the 10-day injured list with a left hamstring strain, the team announced Monday.
Contreras exited Sunday's loss to the New York Yankees in the seventh inning with what the Red Sox called hamstring tightness. He's been dealing with a lingering hamstring issue for a large portion of August and notably grabbed at his hamstring after an at-bat during an Aug. 12 game in Toronto, though he didn't exit the contest.
Red Sox interim manager Chad Tracy said Monday that the "recurring" hamstring issue prompted the IL move, adding that the team hopes the stint will give Contreras a small breather before the final stretch.

Contreras has been Boston's best hitter this season and an anchor of the team's lineup, slashing a career-best .274/.384/.516 with 26 homers and 79 RBIs over 125 games.
Losing the 34-year-old for at least the next 10 days is a blow to a Red Sox team that just got Roman Anthony and Trevor Story back on Sunday after both were sidelined since May.
Boston recalled catcher/first baseman Mickey Gasper from Triple-A Worcester in a corresponding move for Contreras. Gasper, who the Red Sox optioned Sunday, is hitting second and playing first base Monday night against the Seattle Mariners.
