The Texas Rangers traded versatile infielder Josh Smith and minor-league right-hander Josh Stephan to the Toronto Blue Jays for left-hander Adam Macko, the teams announced Monday.
Smith, a Silver Slugger winner in 2024, is currently in Triple-A amid an injury-plagued 2026 season. He's only played in 45 big-league games this year due to a glute strain, wrist inflammation, and a bout of viral meningitis.
Assuming he returns to the majors with Toronto, he'll bring versatility as a left-handed bat who's started at least one game at every position except catcher. The 28-year-old helped the Rangers win the 2023 World Series and then hit .258/.337/.394 with 13 homers, 62 RBIs, and 11 steals during his award-winning 2024 campaign.
Smith is arbitration-eligible through 2028, and has another two minor-league options remaining.
Stephan, 24, has yet to pitch in the majors. The native of Grand Prairie, Texas, owns a 5.44 ERA and 1.43 WHIP with 97 strikeouts across 21 appearances (19 starts) for Triple-A Round Rock this year.
Macko, a native of Slovakia who was raised in Vauxhall, Alberta, made his big-league debut this year but is currently pitching in Triple-A. The 25-year-old southpaw owns a 4.91 ERA, 4.55 FIP, and 1.55 WHIP with 23 strikeouts and 10 walks across 22 relief appearances for Toronto.
