Athletics star first baseman Nick Kurtz won't be attending his first All-Star Game after landing on the 10-day injured list with a right thumb capsule sprain, the team announced Saturday.
Kurtz was slated to start the Midsummer Classic after Toronto Blue Jays star Vladimir Guerrero Jr. dropped out.
The 23-year-old's injury opens the door for New York Yankees star Ben Rice, Boston Red Sox slugger Willson Contreras, or Chicago White Sox standout rookie Munetaka Murakami to start at first for the American League in Tuesday's game.
Kurtz, the reigning AL Rookie of the Year, posted 20 homers, 66 RBIs, and a .902 OPS to go along with an AL-high 76 walks in the first half of the 2026 season.
The Athletics recalled catcher Brian Serven from Triple-A to take Kurtz's spot on the active roster.
