Arizona Diamondbacks right-hander Corbin Burnes suffered a setback in his recovery from Tommy John surgery and will stop throwing after sustaining a teres major strain, manager Torey Lovullo said, according to Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic.

Lovullo added that the new injury will likely delay Burnes' return to around September.

The four-time All-Star had said in February that he aimed to come back around the All-Star break.

This strain comes nearly a year to the day after Burnes' most recent big-league appearance. He underwent surgery to repair a torn ulnar collateral ligament in June 2025.

Burnes, the 2021 NL Cy Young winner, signed a six-year, $210-million contract with the D-Backs in December 2024. He made just 11 starts for Arizona before the elbow injury.

The 31-year-old owns a lifetime 3.15 ERA and 1.07 WHIP with 1,114 strikeouts across 968 big-league innings between the D-Backs, Milwaukee Brewers, and Baltimore Orioles.

Burnes can opt out of his contract with the D-Backs after this season.
