Toronto Blue Jays right-hander José Berríos underwent Tommy John surgery, manager John Schneider said Wednesday, according to Hazel Mae of Sportsnet.
Schneider added that Berríos will be sidelined for 12-18 months, per Shi Davidi of Sportsnet. The 31-year-old needed the procedure after his ligament was damaged by a stress fracture in his right elbow. He was diagnosed with the original injury in mid-March but tried to pitch through the issue in several minor-league starts.
"It sucks for him, and it sucks for us," Schneider said. "I know he'll attack the rehab. But the time part of it sucks."
Berríos posted a 10.67 ERA with 1.81 WHIP and 11 strikeouts over 14 1/3 innings in four minor-league outings this season. He also struggled with reduced fastball velocity.
Berríos has three seasons remaining on his deal. He's owed $19 million this year and $24.7 million in both 2027 and 2028.
