The Boston Red Sox are placing outfielder Roman Anthony on the 10-day injured list with a right wrist sprain, manager Chad Tracy said Thursday, according to Tim Healey of The Boston Globe.
Anthony revealed that he's also dealing with a sprained ligament in his right ring finger, according to Mac Cerullo of the Boston Herald.
Catcher/infielder Mickey Gasper will be recalled from Triple-A Worcester in a corresponding move.
Anthony suffered the injury on a swing during the first inning of Monday's game in Detroit. He left the contest the following inning and subsequently returned to Boston, where he met with a hand specialist.
The 21-year-old hasn't experienced any major setbacks since Monday, leaving he and the team hopeful that he'll return after the minimum 10-day IL stint. Boston decided to make the move instead of playing one man short through the weekend, Tracy said.
Anthony's IL stint is likely to be backdated to Tuesday, meaning his earliest return date would be next Friday, when the Red Sox visit the Atlanta Braves.
Anthony finished third in AL Rookie of the Year voting last season after signing a $130-million extension last summer. He's hitting .229/.354/.321 with one homer, five RBIs, 20 walks, and two steals through his first 30 games in 2026.
Masataka Yoshida could potentially draw into the lineup at either DH or left field while Anthony is sidelined. Yoshida, who's in the fourth season of a five-year, $90-million contract, has made just 69 plate appearances this year due to the Red Sox glut of outfielders.
Gasper, who will take Anthony's spot on the active roster, has put up a .947 OPS with six homers and 27 RBIs in 28 games at Triple-A this year. The 30-year-old New Hampshire native made his MLB debut with the Red Sox in 2024 and had a cup of coffee with Minnesota last season.
