Mets' losing streak reaches 12 as Williams implodes in 9th vs. Twins

The New York Mets have lost 12 straight games following Tuesday's 5-3 defeat against the Minnesota Twins.

Devin Williams imploded in the ninth inning to take the loss. The closer failed to record an out, surrendering two earned runs on one hit and three walks.

Williams owns a 9.95 ERA with 2.68 WHIP over eight appearances this season. The 31-year-old joined the Mets in the offseason on a three-year, $51-million contract after leaving the crosstown rival New York Yankees.

"It's tough, man," Williams said postgame, according to Anthony DiComo of MLB.com. "I've never been a part of something like this."

The Mets' losing streak is now their longest since 2002. This year's club is one loss away from tying the third-longest losing streak in franchise history. The team record is 17, set in 1962.

No team in MLB history has ever made the postseason after losing 12 consecutive contests during the regular season.

The Mets looked poised to snap their skid with Nolan McLean taking a perfect game into the sixth with a three-run lead after Francisco Lindor went deep in the third. However, the Twins roared back with five unanswered runs, including Byron Buxton's two-run homer in the sixth and Luke Keaschall's game-winning RBI single in the ninth.

"You watch Nolan kind of dominate pretty much a whole lineup there for the first five innings," Mets manager Carlos Mendoza said. "… Especially how Lindor sets the tone there with a three-run homer, you feel like you're getting some momentum. But then after that, we couldn't do anything else."

Minnesota's X account took a shot at the Mets postgame.
