The Detroit Tigers placed starter Justin Verlander on the 15-day injured list Saturday due to hip inflammation.

The move is retroactive to April 1.

In a corresponding move, Detroit called up Triple-A right-hander Keider Montero.

Verlander, who this offseason returned to the franchise in which he won his first Cy Young in 2011, struggled in his season debut Monday. The nine-time All-Star lasted just 3 2/3 innings and allowed five earned runs on six hits, including a second-inning home run to Arizona Diamondbacks outfielder Corbin Carroll.

In February, the 43-year-old Verlander signed a one-year deal with Detroit worth $13 million.

Montero, 25, made 12 starts and eight relief appearances for the Tigers last season, tossing a 4.37 ERA over 90 2/3 innings.
