Report: Giants eye Hoerner, Donovan in aggressive pursuit of 2B
The San Francisco Giants are aggressively pursuing a second baseman and have engaged with the Chicago Cubs about Nico Hoerner and the St. Louis Cardinals about Brendan Donovan, sources told ESPN's Jeff Passan.
San Francisco already possesses a strong infield of Matt Chapman at third, Willy Adames at shortstop, and Rafael Devers at first, but it received very little production at second last season as Casey Schmitt, Christian Koss, Tyler Fitzgerald, and Brett Wisely combined for 1.3 fWAR.
Hoerner is among baseball's most gifted infielders and could be on the trade block with the Cubs' recent signing of Alex Bregman. The 28-year-old slashed .297/.345/.394 with 29 doubles, 61 RBIs, and 29 steals while ranking seventh in the majors in defensive runs saved.
The California native is a free agent after 2026.
Donovan put together his first All-Star campaign in 2025, hitting .287/.353/.422 with 32 doubles and 50 RBIs while appearing at three different defensive positions.
The Cardinals have been shopping the 28-year-old this winter and have reportedly received interest from the Boston Red Sox.
Donovan is under contract through 2028.
