First baseman Pete Alonso has already said he intends to opt out of his deal with the New York Mets, and it looks like he wants a big contract in free agency.
Alonso is expected to seek a seven-year deal after he opts out of the two-year, $54-million pact he signed with the Mets last February, reports Mike Puma of the New York Post.
The 30-year-old slugger had a bounce-back year in 2025, slashing .272/.347/.524 with 38 home runs, 41 doubles, and 126 RBIs in 162 games played.
Alonso's 3.6 fWAR was also the fourth highest among major-league first basemen behind Matt Olson, Vladimir Guerrero Jr., and Freddie Freeman, all of whom inked long-term deals.
| PLAYER | CONTRACT | SIGNED |
|---|---|---|
| Matt Olson | 8 years $168M | March 2022 |
| Vladimir Guerrero Jr. | 14 years $500M | April 2025 |
| Freddie Freeman | 6 years $162M | March 2022 |
Alonso will enter free agency as the top first baseman available after hitting a franchise-record 264 homers in seven seasons with the Mets.
The five-time All-Star won't be attached to a qualifying offer this offseason, although a team would need to provide draft-pick compensation to the Mets if it signs him.
