Boston Red Sox right-hander Lucas Giolito is unlikely to pitch in the postseason due to an elbow injury, manager Alex Cora said on Tuesday, according to The Boston Globe's Tim Healey.
Giolito was left off Boston's wild-card roster against the New York Yankees after he experienced elbow discomfort during a recent bullpen session. The injury isn't as severe as the Red Sox had feared, but it's enough to put Giolito's postseason participation in jeopardy.
Connelly Early is the likeliest candidate to start Game 3 of the wild-card series with Giolito sidelined, Cora added.
The 31-year-old Giolito pitched well throughout the regular season, posting a 10-4 record with a 3.41 ERA in 145 innings.
