The Texas Rangers shut down infielders Corey Seager and Marcus Semien for the remainder of the season, manager Bruce Bochy announced Tuesday, according to Jeff Wilson of DLLS Sports.

Seager hasn't played since Aug. 27 after undergoing an emergency appendectomy. He was attempting to return to the lineup, but the Rangers are five games out of playoff contention with six games remaining.

The five-time All-Star shortstop slashed .271/.373/.487 with 21 home runs and 50 RBIs in 102 games before his surgery.

Semien has been out of action since Aug. 21 after being diagnosed with a fractured third metatarsal bone and a Lisfranc sprain in his left foot. He was supposed to return following four-to-six weeks and planned to play if the Rangers made it to the postseason.

The 35-year-old second baseman was in the midst of his worst season since joining the Rangers, posting a .669 OPS (95 OPS+).
