New York Yankees manager Aaron Boone said he's not going to bench Jazz Chisholm Jr. after the second baseman made a baserunning gaffe during Saturday's 2-0 loss to the Miami Marlins.

Chisholm was doubled off in the second inning after Paul Goldschmidt popped a ball up to Marlins second baseman Xavier Edwards.

Boone explained that Chisholm thought Edwards might intentionally let the ball drop to get the lead runner and wound up too far away from first to get back in time.

"No, it's a guy trying to make a play," Boone said when asked if he would bench Chisholm, according to YES Network.

"I get that it looks bad and it's a bad play, but this is not a case of a guy that's dogging it. He's just trying to make a play, and just because it's going bad right now and the worlds on fire, I'm not just going to take guys out for giving a crap."

Chisholm confirmed what his skipper said in a postgame interview.

"I saw something that I thought they were going to do. He deked it like he was going to do it, he didn't do it, "Chisholm said. " Sometimes you get aggressive and you get caught and make an out."

The infielder added the Yankees "are going to be just fine," but they've got to clean up the mistakes they've been making over the last week.

Chisholm's teammate Austin Wells was doubled off in the ninth inning of a tie game against the Tampa Bay Rays on Wednesday after he forgot how many outs there were.

Yankees shortstop Anthony Volpe has also been criticized of late for his defense, which included three errors against the Rays. Volpe leads the majors with 16 errors.
