Report: Cubs inquired about Marlins' Alcantara, Cabrera

The Chicago Cubs might be looking to make a splash.

Chicago has made inquiries about Miami Marlins starting pitchers Sandy Alcantara and Edward Cabrera, sources told The Athletic's Ken Rosenthal.

Alcantara is one of the better pitchers who could be made available ahead of this year's July 31 trade deadline. The 2022 NL Cy Young winner was off to a rough start to the campaign but has allowed three runs or fewer in four consecutive starts, dropping his ERA from 8.47 to 6.69 during that span.

The 29-year-old would be owed the remainder of his $17.3-million salary for this season, plus an additional $17.3 million next season. He also has a $21-million club option for 2027.

Cabrera, 27, owns a 3.81 ERA and 9.6 K/9 in 12 starts this season. The Dominican right-hander is arbitration-eligible for the first time in 2026 and isn't destined for free agency until 2029.

The Cubs enter Wednesday 2 1/2 games ahead of the Milwaukee Brewers for first place in the National League Central. They rank second in the majors in runs scored, but 23rd in the league in rotation ERA while playing without Justin Steele and Javier Assad.
