We spoke with Toronto Blue Jays star first baseman Vladimir Guerrero Jr. about the team's recent hot stretch, the significance of his historic contract extension, whether he'd consider playing for Canada at the World Baseball Classic, and his favorite Latin cuisine. This conversation - in partnership with BODYARMOR - has been edited for length and clarity.

theScore: Why was it important for you to sign long term with the Blue Jays?

Guerrero: I've always said that I wanted to stay in Toronto. I've been here since I was 16 years old. In my mind, I've always wanted to stay with one team and one organization because I know the people here. That's why I decided to sign.

theScore: You said your family didn't want to leave Toronto. What makes playing and living there special?

Guerrero: The fans, how they treat you and support you no matter what. They've always been here for us. To me, when you have fans like that, you gotta give the love back that you get from them.

theScore: What would it mean to you to have your name on the Level of Excellence one day?

Guerrero: I'm not thinking about that right now. I hope one day my name will be there, but now I'm focused on playing and helping the team win.

theScore: What about this organization makes you believe you can win a World Series? Do you think the team can do it this year?

Guerrero: Everybody is having fun together. We go out there and compete. We're not scared to lose. We're not scared to go out there and do whatever we can to help the team win.

theScore: The offense has been much better this season. What changes were made to get more out of the bats?

Guerrero: Everybody is doing their part. Everybody can take a walk. If we need a bunt, we can bunt. If we need a steal, we steal. We're playing the right way right now. And to me, when you play the game the right way, something (good) can happen.

theScore: Bo Bichette being healthy has been big for the club so far. He's a free agent at the end of the season. Are you going to try to convince him to re-sign?

Guerrero: It's personal. He can decide. To me, personally, I would like him to stay here, but I can't control that. He knows his value, and whatever he ends up doing, I will be happy for him.

theScore: Who's the best guy from a visiting team to talk to at first base?

Guerrero: It depends. I like talking with Ronald Acuña Jr., Teoscar Hernández, and Fernando Tatis Jr. I can talk with those three every day.

theScore: You finished second in the 2019 Home Run Derby and won the 2023 event. Do you plan on taking part again?

Guerrero: I'm not thinking about that right now. I've already won one. I will probably decide later if I go in another one, but as of right now, I'm not competing again.

theScore: The 2026 World Baseball Classic is happening in March. Why do you play for the Dominican Republic over Canada?

Guerrero: That's a good question. I was born in Canada, but I grew up in the Dominican Republic. My dad never went to a World Baseball Classic. He told me as a kid that I should represent the Dominican if I ever got a chance to do it. I grew up with that. So, I think I will play with the Dominicans, but maybe if I'm not retired, I will play with Canada one day.

theScore: How cool is it to see your face on your own limited edition sports drink? Was that something you ever thought was possible as a kid?

Guerrero: It's cool. It's like a dream come true. You dream about this as a kid, and when it comes true, it feels really good.

theScore: With so many different endorsement opportunities available to you, what goes into choosing a company like BODYARMOR?

Guerrero: It makes me feel fresh. It keeps me hydrated. I like the drink. It makes me feel in the game all the time and helps me stay healthy and on the field by keeping hydrated. Fruit punch is my favorite flavor.

theScore: OK, Vlad. Here are some fun questions to finish off the interview. What's your favorite Latin restaurant or meal in Toronto?

Guerrero: My favorite meal is rice, beans, and goat, but I don't have a favorite Latin restaurant in Toronto. My cousin makes my food for me. My cousin is my chef.

theScore: Is there any chance that you or Bo will grow your hair out again?

Guerrero: Not me. I'm done with that, but maybe Bo will let it grow back again.
