Miami Marlins left-hander Ryan Weathers was removed from Saturday's start against the Tampa Bay Rays a few innings after taking an errant throw to the head.

The Marlins said Weathers was removed for what they termed "precautionary reasons," and he's now undergoing further evaluation, according to Brian Murphy of MLB.com. However, the team didn't clarify what sort of injury he was being evaluated for.

Weathers had just completed his warmup pitches before the bottom of the first inning when catcher Nick Fortes threw down to second and struck him in the top of the head. After being checked out for several minutes and throwing more warmup pitches, Weathers was cleared to remain on the mound.

Weathers shook it off initially and got through the first inning unscathed but struggled during the rest of his abbreviated outing. He allowed four runs (three earned) and three hits - including a Christopher Morel two-run homer - on 57 pitches with just one strikeout during his three innings of work.

Weathers' velocity also dipped during his final inning of work, and he was seen flexing his left arm on the mound, according to Murphy.

Weathers, 25, owns a 3.28 ERA and 1.05 WHIP with 23 strikeouts and eight walks over five starts in 2025. He made his season debut in mid-May after starting the year on the injured list with a flexor strain.
